Been a while….

by David Vasta on Jun.28, 2010, under Godzilla

Sorry y’all. I have been busy with that thing called work and not posting much. I will try to get back on the horse. I have an up coming trip to South America, not Japan, but it’s a trip. So I have been trying to learn Spanish, not Japanese, and get some free time in down there.

Back to Nature in Southern Japan

by David Vasta on May.20, 2010, under Travel to Japan

Only if the internets and the googles would have been around when I lived in Japan. Ok, it was but I don’t think it was that popular yet and the NAVY in Sasebo did not have anything set up yet. You live in a mini vacuum while in the Navy at times. I did not really find the internet until I moved to Seattle, WA and started using it at the public library in Seattle.

Anywhoooo…. Here is a nice little article about spending some quality time in Southern Japan on the Weekender.

US Navy in Japan – Not going well.

by David Vasta on May.17, 2010, under Living in Japan

While I lived in Sasebo and visited Okinawa from time to time, it seems the locals are not happy with the Marines or Navy in the area.  I am alarmed at the claim that there is crime in the area of the base. I would be ashamed to think that US Military are committing crimes while in another country. I would also hope that the US Navy exports those problems back to the US for Court Marshal.

Update – I am still here

by David Vasta on Mar.09, 2010, under Japan in General

Just wanted to post that I am still here. I am studding Japanese in my spare time and also on a diet. I need to lose weight to fit into those plane seats properly and not bump everyone on the trains. The plan is still Japan in 2011!

Phase of the Day :: My hovercraft is full of eels

by David Vasta on Feb.18, 2010, under Learning Japanese

So I was getting lost on the web and found this little gem. I am going to save it until the right time in Japan.

It may not be the most useful phrase but if you get in a bind and need to tell someone that; My hovercraft is full of eels, then you will know how to do it. Moreover I have spend the morning thinking of new ways to use this phrase in conversations. My new word would be Hovercraft or hobākurafuto. Enjoy!

My hovercraft is full of eels

私のホバークラフトは鰻でいっぱいです
(Watashi no hobākurafuto wa unagi de ippai desu.)

You’re Welcome!

Sorry for being so Theme Happy

by David Vasta on Feb.17, 2010, under Godzilla

I have been playing with Themes. As you know it does not effect the content but it can be annoying. I think I have stopped on this one you see now. What do you think? I might punch it up a bit but will keep the format.

Vacation in Japan

by David Vasta on Feb.17, 2010, under Travel to Japan

So over this past weekend we started talking about a vacation in Japan again. I have been asking to vacation there for about….oh….ten years. The last time I was in Japan was 1996 when we stopped in on the USS Camden (AOE-2) while on the way to the Persian Gulf. The Camden stopped in Sasebo, Japan. I can recall just being excited to be there. I think we were in port for 4 days. Which gave me 3 days to “Japan it Up”!

The day I did have to work was fun because I was a Boatswain’s Mate and I was in charge of the small boats, taking people to and from the ship to shore. So I got to spend most of that day in the one port I knew like the back of my hand. I also got to tool around base between runs, so it was pretty nice.

I digress. Back to visiting Japan for a vacation purpose. I am going to rough outline my trip and let you the readers tear it apart.

Help Yourself and help Haiti at the same time.

by David Vasta on Feb.16, 2010, under Godzilla

I found this while I was reading the news today:

Give and Receive

For every 100 copies of the Things Japanese Paperback that are sold before March 15th, 2010, BionicBong will support $500 to Haiti and these causes:

Clean Water – Charity:Water, World Hunger – World Food Programme, Immunization – GAVI-Alliance, Alleviating Poverty – KIVA
If we sell 100 copies we will support $500, if we sell 200 we will support $1000…You get the idea and now it’s up to you how much we support.
